Manchester Heading

Currying favour

The £100 winning curry rant is….

A ton of curry
A couple of weeks ago we offered a £100 for an Indian restaurant meal in exchange for a damn fine rant. There were hundreds of entries so thanks very much. It’s your words that count - what we think is neither here nor there. Indeed the range of different establishments included many we’d never heard of. The biggest congratulations perhaps goes to the towns north and east of Manchester which earned scores of recommendations. Going for a curry is obviously a bigger part of life here than in the wealthy playgrounds south of the city. The winning entry from Ger (yes we’ll track you down) won because of its passion and enthusiasm. We were also impressed by the staff of the recommended restaurant inviting Ger to watch a curry being prepared. The entry has been edited here due to space considerations but you can check it out in full glory at £100 for a rant.

Curry

Winning entry
Ger says:
‘As a curry fanatic I feel I am truly blessed to live close to and work in Manchester. I've eaten at most curry houses within the city and agree with previous posts that the food at EastzEast and Akbars is wonderfully sublime. Also in the city centre Lets Eat on Butter Street (back of Kendals) has to be mentioned for its rice and three - as does This and That and the other curry cafes in the Northern Quarter. However my favourite curry house is actually a pub called The Bull in Old Glossop on the A57 to Sheffield. The food is great (especially the tarka dal) and Mahmood the head waiter simply can't do enough to help you. One evening while enjoying a few pints and a game of pool with a couple of mates, I struck up conversation with the chef who was taking a break in the pool room. We talked about Indian food for a bit and when my mates and I went into the restaurant part he gave us some free samples of different starters and even invited me into the kitchen to watch the curries being cooked. So, real ale, pool, great food, great service and a cooking demonstration in a beautiful old stone pub on the edge of the Peak District. That takes a lot to beat.’
